ATLANTA — If you missed the northern lights this week , you may get another chance tonight.
The NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center says geomagnetic storming will continue through November 14th. SWPC has issued a level G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch for Thursday and a G1 (minor) for Friday.
According to its aurora forecast map , if conditions are right the lights could be seen as far south as Pennsylvania and Oregon.
The sun is near the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, making auroras more common and widespread. Charged particles from the sun collide with Earth’s atmosphere, producing the glowing light shows known as the northern and southern lights.
During this period, the sun’s magnetic poles swap places, creating twists and magnetic disturbances that fuel solar storm
