The largest great white shark tracked by OCEARCH, a nonprofit organization that studies the creatures, is moving south.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the massive 13-foot, 9-inch, 1,653-pound great white, named Contender, pinged off the coast of Atlantic City, New Jersey, according to OCEARCH's shark tracking app.

Just over a month ago, on Sept. 29, researchers at the organization received the shark's location as he was swimming through the Gulf of St. Lawrence, northeast of Anticosta Island, Canada.

Since September, the shark's location pinged 11 times as he swam south toward warmer waters. Here's what to know.

Contender was first tagged nearly a year ago

OCEARCH researchers first tagged Contender on Jan. 17, offshore of the Florida-Georgia border, according to the nonprofit's app.
