Michigan State's head coach Jonathan Smith looks on from the sideline during the fourth quarter in the game against Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

A Big Ten school in the state of Michigan is facing three years of probation from the NCAA, but it's not the one you think.

Michigan State's football program has been penalized by the NCAA for violations made by the previous coaching staff under Mel Tucker, who investigators said failed to monitor the program while at the helm. The alleged violations stem from recruiting and include the staff arranging "impermissible recruiting inducements and benefits," while also covering expenses for unofficial visits and engaging in improper contact with recruits.

As a result, 14 wins from the last three seasons have been vacated, including all five from coach Jonathan Smith's first season in 2024. The school was also fined $30,000 plus 1.5% of the school's football budget, and the terms of its probation include recruiting restrictions.

Tucker, who was fired for cause in 2023 amid sexual harassment allegations, received a three-year show-cause. Former general manager Saeed Khalif and former assistant coach Brandon Jordan received show-cause orders of six years and five years, respectively.

As a result, Smith's official record at Michigan State drops to 3-13, and he's now technically winless against Big Ten opponents.
