NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (WSIL) -- A deputy responded to a report of suspicious activity in Conran on the evening of November 9. The New Madrid County Sheriff's Office said residents there found a man, identified as Jared Childers, in one of their cars in the driveway.

Authorities said Childers is a registered sex offender on parole for statutory rape. Childers was accused of fleeing the scene after being confronted by the homeowner.

A deputy later found Childers at a gas station in Portageville.

The sheriff's office said Childers then attempted to flee and then fought with the deputy, which resulted in a black eye. According to online court records, Childers faces a resisting arrest charge.

Childers is due next in court at the New Madrid County Courthouse on November 20.
