Indian passports are set to become more secure and technologically advanced with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rolling out upgraded services under the Passport Seva Programme (PSP). The upgrade introduces e-passports equipped with modern security features, marking a major shift in India’s travel documentation system.
A key highlight of the initiative is the launch of the e-passport, a hybrid document embedded with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna that meet International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.
The chip securely stores the passport holder’s biometric and personal information, including the photograph, fingerprints, and other personal details, in encrypted form.
