MINNESOTA — A multi-state outbreak of infant botulism, linked to ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula, has reached Minnesota.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 15 cases across 12 states; the Minnesota Department of Health issued a press release stating one of those cases is an infant in Minnesota.
Botulism is a rare, serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body's nerves, the release said. The illness causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis and, in some cases, death — though no deaths have been confirmed amid the current outbreak.
According to the release, ByHeart Inc. recalled two lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula:
