NEWPORT, Mich. — The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants to know why a safety valve in DTE Energy’s Fermi 2 high pressure coolant injection system was not working when tested on Wednesday morning.

The stuck valve “could have prevented the fulfillment of a safety function needed to mitigate the consequences of an accident, based on loss of a single train safety system,” the NRC stated in an event report posted online Thursday.

Agency spokesman Viktoria Mitlying said she is trying to find out more information from NRC technical staff.
