An 80-year-old woman and her 52-year-old son were found dead and decomposing inside their Brooklyn apartment after neighbors reported a foul odor that had been growing stronger for days.

Officers were called to the building on Jay Street near Tillary Street just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, after residents asked them to check on the elderly resident, the NYPD said.

Neighbors told officers they had not seen either the mother or her son in some time and had become alarmed by what they described as a powerful, worsening smell in the hallway.

When officers entered the apartment, they discovered both victims dead inside. Neither had visible injuries, and no signs of trauma were found, police said. The city medical examiner will determine how they died.

No criminality is suspected at this time, police said.
