CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – President Donald Trump has proposed giving most Americans a $2,000 payment funded by money collected from tariffs on imported goods.

The administration says the plan could take several forms, including direct checks or tax reductions, but officials stress that the details are still being worked out, including who would qualify and how the payments would be delivered.

The challenge is the numbers. Sending $2,000 to most adults earning below a certain income would cost roughly $300 billion.

That is far more than the approximately $195 billion in customs duties collected over the past fiscal year.

Adding to the uncertainty, a Supreme Court case is reviewing whether some key tariffs enacted under emergency authority are lawful.
