Redevelopment of the defunct Homer City plant into a natural gas powerhouse is in its “preliminary early stages,” and could have a data center tenant by the end of this year, officials said Thursday morning.

“Believe it or not, we are one of the very few in this nation that are coming back, and not only replacing what we left the grid with, but adding new power,” said Robin Gorman, the vice president of Homer City Redevelopment and former commissioner for Indiana County.

Launched in April, the project plans to bring 4.5 gigawatts onto the grid using natural gas, potentially making it the largest electricity producer in the state. Project speakers gave their updates at the Indiana County Regional Development Conference.
