A Decatur City police officer is currently under investigation following a shooting during a traffic stop.
According to Decatur Police Chief Torry Mack, an officer pulled over a driver for a minor traffic violation at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday near 12th Ave. and First Street Southwest. The person stepped out the car and “immediately brandished what appeared to be their firearm towards the officer.”
The officer fired at most three shots and hit the person at least once. The officer was the only other person on the scene during the shooting.
When reporters asked him to clarify if there was a weapon, Chief Mack said, “We found something that appeared to be a firearm.”
The shooting victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, according to Chief Mack.
