MADISON, (WKOW) -- When members of Congress voted late Wednesday night to reopen the government, they also passed new legislation that will significantly impact the hemp industry.
The bill closes the 2018 Farm Bill loophole, which allowed hemp-derived THC products to be legal as long as they contained less than 0.3 percent THC.
These products will now be banned, effectively outlawing more than 95 percent of hemp extract products on the market.
Nearly all GOP lawmakers, including all Republicans from Wisconsin, supported the hemp ban. One advocate, Republican Congressman Pete Sessions of Texas, said in a statement, "This legislation closes the hemp loophole that allowed intoxicating and dangerous high-potency THC products like delta-8 to flood our communities."
