BANGOR, Maine — Some Bangor residents are pushing back this week against the city council's decision to ban public comment on Zoom.

On Tuesday, councilors voted unanimously to block interaction using the virtual meeting software. It comes after months of harassment from anonymous participants , often using racist and homophobic language.

"I'm not a fan of cutting off access. I want to hear from people, but we also have a meeting to run," City Councilor Michael Beck said.

The council plans to revisit the issue in January, as they prepare a long term solution.

"We certainly can't stop people from speaking because of the content, but we have the right to not allow them to distract the meeting," Beck said.
