LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - An invasive worm species is making its way into major cities across Michigan, including Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing.

The ‘Jumping Worm’ gets its name because of its unique snake-like movements. According to Master Gardener Ulric Chung with Michigan State University Extension , the worms wiggle rapidly as a defense mechanism and can sometimes jump up to a foot in the air.

“If you think about normal worms, how... they stretch out and pull themselves forward, these don’t do that. They kind of thrash side to side. If you disturb them will jump,” said Brent Crain, MSU Consumer Horticulture Extension Educator. “You know, once you’ve seen them, you can’t unsee it.”
