MORRISVILLE, Vt. (WCAX) - It’s the end of an era for an iconic American coin. The U.S. Mint pressed its last-ever penny this week, per President Trump’s orders. It’s partly because pennies cost, well, a pretty penny to make at nearly four cents each, according to the Mint.
In Vermont, I found mixed feelings about the penny’s demise when residents gave me their two cents on the change.
If you pay with cash, it’s likely you will now get different coins in return.
“I heard once upon a time that it actually costs more to make a penny than a penny is actually worth, so I think it’s a good idea, I guess,” said Emerson Colt of Calais.
With the last-ever minting of the penny, we won’t see any new one-cent coins. But they will still stay in circulation.
