The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is urging drivers to use extra caution on the roads as deer activity increases during the fall and early winter months. ALEA says vehicle-versus-wildlife crashes rise sharply this time of year, and 2024 data shows just how common these incidents have become.
According to ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division, Troopers investigated 1,652 vehicle-versus-wildlife crashes statewide last year. More than 1,200 of those happened during the fall and winter months, when deer movement is at its peak. That’s compared to just over 400 crashes recorded in the spring and summer.
Officials say the numbers show a clear spike in collisions beginning in the fall and continuing through the winter rut season. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, especially during dawn and dusk,
