The ACT government has defended a decision to close some schools on Friday, November 14, throwing the city into chaos as parents rush to find alternative arrangements for students.

Education Minister Yvette Berry said she was hoping to have schools open by Monday as asbestos experts work over the weekend to test and remediate schools, if asbestos is detected.

The Catholic education office has not closed schools or early learning centres and is urgently seeking clarification from the ACT government about the reason behind public school closures.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission recalled three children's sand products on Wednesday, November 12.

A directorate survey found Kadink Sand is used in ACT schools for art or sensory activities.
