UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A man is in critical condition after he was shot by police on the Upper East Side on Thursday.
Police responded to a call for a man with a firearm on East 107th Street and Madison Avenue just after 7 p.m.
Officers canvassed the area and found the suspect at 7:20 p.m. near East 96th Street and Madison Avenue.
An NYPD officer encountered the suspect, a 20-year-old man, and discharged his service weapon, striking the man, according to police.
They say the suspect fired his weapon before being shot by police.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing.
