ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Federal employees who work in downtown St. Louis say the end of the weeks-long government shutdown has not ended the financial stress it created for their families.

Outside the Robert A. Young Federal Building on Spruce Street, workers described more than a month without paychecks as “rough,” saying they drained savings, took out loans and even turned to food banks just to get by.

“I get off an 8-hour shift and go Lyft and Uber, so I can have some money to take care of my kids,” one federal employee told First Alert 4.

Another federal employee said relatives in the same household were hit on both sides of the shutdown. One spouse was deemed essential and kept working without pay, while another was furloughed and barred from working at all, leaving the en
