The former chief of staff to Governor Gavin Newsom, Dana Williamson, has been indicted on 23 federal charges accusing her of helping steal about $225,000 from a dormant campaign account belonging to former attorney general Xavier Becerra. The indictment says the scheme ran from 2022 to 2024 and also alleges Williamson claimed more than $1 million in personal expenses as business deductions. Co-conspirators Sean McCluskie and Greg Campbell have taken plea deals. Williamson has pleaded not guilty as both supporters and critics respond to the case, which has drawn national attention.
