MARBLEHEAD, Ohio — A local server says she was tricked out of $3,000 after a caller claiming to be an Ottawa County sheriff’s deputy convinced her that a coworker was being held in jail.
Jolita Myers, who works at Red’s Lakehouse in Marblehead, said the call came on Tuesday, and the caller sounded professional and authoritative.
“You’re embarrassed. You feel stupid,” Myers said. “I know people are going to be like, 'oh my God, what a freaking dummy, what an idiot.'”
According to Myers, the caller identified himself as a sheriff’s officer and asked to speak with a manager.
The recording of the call, shared by police, plays: “Hello Ms. Jojo, uh, my name is Sergeant [unknown]… and I’m with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and I'm looking for a manager, someone in charge.”
