MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Rutherford County Commission voted Thursday night to put out a bid for a third-party contractor to audit the county’s property assessments.
Tennessee State Comptroller Jason Mumpower recommended the action after his own audit found serious mistakes in property assessments by the county’s property assessor.
The comptroller’s report showed significant errors including new construction and buildings being left off the tax rolls, and incorrect square footage of homes.
Some homeowners could be overpaying thousands of dollars in taxes as a result.
Thursday night, the County Commission met for the first time since Mumpower personally presented his report to commissioners.
