The Canberra Liberals will nominate Jeremy Hanson, who resigned as deputy opposition leader on Monday, as the next speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

Mark Parton, the Canberra Liberals' leader, told party members on Friday the first full party room meeting since the leadership change had decided to put forward Jeremy Hanson for the position.

Mr Parton resigned as speaker on Monday and emerged from a Liberal party room meeting with the unanimous support of his colleagues to take over as leader .

The change followed two weeks of growing tension across the party after former leader Leanne Castley suspended Elizabeth Lee and Peter Cain from the party room, after the pair crossed the floor to support a Greens' push to add a sitting week in 2026.
