BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Neighbors near Rock Mountain Lake Road in Bessemer have been pushing back against a proposed data center for months , saying it would disrupt their way of life, raise utility bills, and potentially hurt the environment.

A national conservation group is joining their fight, saying the center will have a major impact on a fish population found only in this area of Alabama.

The Center for Biological Diversity tells WBRC that a new species of fish was recently discovered in Valley Creek, the Birmingham darter, whose largest remaining population is right next to the data center site.

Will Harlan, the Southeast Director of the Center for Biological Diversity said, “Birmingham darter is perhaps the most endangered fish in Alabama and in the country.”
