During Grey Cup Week 2019, the struggling Maple Leafs said goodbye to the accomplished Mike Babcock, essentially ending his time as a National Hockey League coach.
The justifiable, yet almost merciful ending for Babcock came after just nine Leafs wins in 23 regular-season games.
And there wasn’t a lot of argument against the coach firing at the time. It seemed the right things to do at the time.
This is Grey Cup Week six years later. The current Maple Leafs, heading nowhere through almost a quarter of the season, 14th in the Eastern Conference, have eight wins after 18 games. Struggling, really, the way the Babcock Leafs were struggling, in need of more effort and more of an identity.
