Residents in Albuquerque's Sandia Heights are opposing PNM's plans to build transmission lines, partially along Tramway Boulevard, citing concerns over scenic obstruction and wildfire risks during a community meeting on Thursday.
PNM plans to build a substation in the city's northeast quadrant by 2028 to reduce power outages, but the 12 transmission lines needed for the project have sparked controversy.
David Becker, who lives along Tramway Boulevard, recounted a 2018 fire he claims was caused by PNM, saying, "There was a fire behind my fence that was like 100-foot flames, and it burned up my whole backyard that I had to pay for to get fixed."
Becker listened closely as PNM representatives discussed fire mitigation plans for the new transmission lines, but he remained skeptical.
