A long-running landscaping choice on a quiet Mermaid Beach street has erupted into a local flashpoint, after Gold Coast City Council ordered a resident to remove the artificial turf she installed years ago on the nature strip outside her home.

Amanda Blair, who has lived with the tidy patch of synthetic grass bordering her front fence for half a decade, said the directive came out of the blue.

The notice arrived only after an unidentified neighbour lodged a complaint - a move she described online as deeply frustrating.

“Some idiot has decided to ring the council who now demand we rip it up and replace it with real grass,” she posted to social media, adding that the turf had remained “high-quality” and “always pristine” since the day it was laid.
