New Delhi: Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Alinagar, is leading by 8,500-plus votes.

Thakur had got 22,236 votes votes till 11.50 am after six rounds of counting. Binod Mishra of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) was second with 13,692 votes, while Biplaw Kumar Choudhary of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) was a distant third with 686 votes.

Alinagar is part of Darbhanga district, while Thakur hails from Benipatti in the neighbouring Madhubani district, about 35 km from the Mithilanchal region in north Bihar. Show Full Article

The BJP, in fielding Thakur, chose to focus not only on a generational shift, but also sought to highlight the fact that a young leader was given a chance who does not belong to a political family.
