PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Portland city councilors’ vote to reject a plan to cut millions from a city program could symbolize a divide happening within the council. The proposal narrowly failed, but if it had passed, millions would have been slashed from a program that funds homeless sweeps and redirected to housing and food assistance.
After a contentious meeting on Wednesday, the City Council narrowly voted against an amendment that would have cut more than $4 million from the city’s Impact Reduction Program. But the amendments’ failure only shows a greater divide between the Councilors moving forward when solving one of the city’s biggest issues.
“I think people reacted with a lot of passion because that seemed like a scary idea to go backwards,” said Councilor Eric Zimmerman.
