After being hit for more than 100 runs on day one while bowling, pivotal England batter Joe Root’s quest for an elusive maiden century Down Under has hit a snag.

The No.4, who is one of the world’s great batsmen, was dismissed in dismal fashion against the English Lions in their lone Ashes warm-up game at Lilac Hill Park on Friday.

Root managed one run from 12 deliveries before backup quick Matt Potts claimed his scalp with a short ball.

The ball did nothing special, but the Englishman simply spooned it to Lions skipper Tom Haines for a basic catch.

To make matters worse, it came after opener Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett dominated the docile wicket, which is nothing like what the team can expect to be facing against Australia at Optus Stadium, for a 182-run partnership.
