At Shelter Care, each night we house 22 formerly homeless families through HUD’s Continuum of Care (CoC) grant funding.
These funds provide permanent housing — one of the most effective tools for ending homelessness.
In Illinois, CoC programs help keep more than 20,000 people safely housed each year.
Now, that stability is at risk. HUD wants to cut short its two-year grant commitment and force communities into a rushed competition — as soon as the government shutdown ends.
That would leave programs unable to pay for rent assistance, veteran housing, and essential staff. Households which have worked hard to rebuild their lives could face eviction and homelessness again. Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more!
