A young mother has been left terrified after an intruder gripping a mallet slithered quietly through her family home, getting within metres of where she and her young child were sleeping.

In a chilling twist, it was only when the woman checked security cameras hoping for answers about her missing possessions did she realise an uninvited visitor had been so close.

“(I’m) very scared because I don’t know when he (went) into the room because I fell asleep,” Huong told 7NEWS.

“I’m very panicked because if I (had woken) up, maybe he (would have attacked) me.”

The man stole a phone after walking through an open back door at the home on Illawarra Cres in Ballajura, in Perth ’s north, early on Thursday morning.
