SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Now that the U.S. Mint has stopped pressing pennies, coin collectors are offering guidance on which coins to save and which to spend.
Dave Sorrick, a coin collector since his teenage years and representative of the National Numismatic Association and a member of the Ozark Coin Club, said the decision to phase out penny production marks the end of an era for a historically significant coin.
“The cent has always been a very, very powerful coin. And it’s a shame to see it phased out,” Sorrick said.
With the Philadelphia mint no longer producing pennies, Sorrick said certain coins could be worth keeping.
“The coins in 1958 and earlier are called wheat cents. And those are highly collectible. In fact, most people who are coin collectors start with the wheat penny. A
