A man was shot and killed after attacking a security guard with a knife inside the emergency room lobby of Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital late Thursday night, Nov. 13, Newburgh police said.

The incident happened at approximately 11:05 p.m., when City of Newburgh Police responded to the hospital for “the report of a shot fired.”

Before officers arrived, the City of Newburgh Fire Department had been dispatched to the same location for “a fire alarm box pulled within the emergency room lobby.” Police said it was later learned that a disorderly man in the lobby had pulled the alarm.

According to police, hospital security confronted the man, who “then brandished a knife and attacked a security guard.” An armed St. Luke’s security guard fired one round, which “incapacitated the attacker.”

The attacker, identified as Carlos Ortiz, 45, of Newburgh, was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. A woman standing nearby was also injured with what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury, authorities said.

Police said there are no charges at this time. The case is being investigated by the City of Newburgh Detective Division and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force. Anyone with information is asked to call 845-569-7519, and “all calls may remain anonymous.”
