CITY OF NEWBURGH – A 45-year-old man was shot and killed after attacking a security guard at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh on Thursday night.
According to the City of Newburgh Police Department, Carlos Ortiz pulled a fire alarm box in the emergency room lobby at about 11:07 p.m. and was acting disorderly. Ortiz was confronted by St. Luke’s security staff at which time he allegedly brandished a knife and attacked a security guard. A single round was fired by an armed St. Luke’s security guard, which incapacitated Ortiz, of Newburgh.
He was later pronounced dead. A woman in proximity to the altercation was also injured with what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury.
At this time, there are no charges, and the incident is being investigated by the City of Newbu
