New research supported by the British Heart Foundation has created a blood test that could let people know if they are experiencing a heart attack within a matter of minutes. Currently, when a person goes to hospital for chest pains, doctors take their blood for a laboratory test to check for troponin, a protein released into the blood when the heart is damaged. ‌

But getting the results can take as long as two hours, delaying decisions and care for a patient that may be experiencing an urgent medical emergency. ‌

Now, scientists have created a new way to test for this protein that can be done on the spot and could reveal if someone has had a heart attack within 20 minutes. ‌
