Incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) has won or was leading in 83 out of the 243 seats in the Bihar Assembly elections, nearly doubling its tally of 43 seats from the 2020 polls.

As of 6.28 pm, the party had won 30 seats and was leading in 53 of the 101 constituencies it contested, making it the second-largest party in terms of seats won.

The JD(U) contested the Bihar elections as part of the National Democratic Alliance, which also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, Union minister Chirag Paswan’s faction of the Lok Janshakti Party, the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and the Hindustani Awam Morcha.

The NDA was ahead of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan in 202 of the 243 seats as counting was underway on Friday.
