A man has been shot by police at Montparnasse train station in Paris after allegedly threatening to slit people's throats. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift evacuation of the busy transport hub in the heart of the French capital.
According to Paris prosecutors, the suspect was armed with a knife and had a history of domestic violence. He was wanted for making death threats against his ex-partner and children. The man was about to be arrested as he disembarked from a TGV train when the confrontation took place.
Reports indicate that the suspect attempted to stab himself in the throat during the police intervention. The shooting occurred at approximately 2.44pm local time. Witnesses reported that a second individual was also injured during the operation, with claims that he was shot in the foot.
Jean-Baptiste Marty, a journalist with French radio network Europe1, provided details on social media, stating, "Completely locked-down sector at station #montparnasse: a man who threatened to slit the throats of his son and his wife at their home boarded a train connecting Rennes to Paris. Upon arriving at Gare Montparnasse, he was subdued by police officers. The suspect, armed with a knife, was hit by several bullets from the officers."
The situation has raised concerns about public safety and the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with individuals known for violent behaviour. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and the circumstances surrounding it.
