The UN refugee agency said on Friday that tens of thousands of people who fled the Sudanese city of al-Fashir are missing, raising fears for their safety after reports of rape, killings, and other abuses from those who escaped. Al-Fashir, suffering from famine, was the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in western Darfur before it was taken by the Rapid Support Forces on October 26 after an 18-month siege.
People escaping the city have described civilians being shot in the streets and attacked by drones. Reports from Darfur say women are searching for wild leaves and berries to make soup.
