A recent poll has suggested that only a small share of Americans is aware of China ’s Muslim population in northwest China—despite international attention on human rights concerns in the region.
In a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in March 2022, just 17 percent of adults in the United States correctly identified Xinjiang as the region in China with the highest per-capita population of Muslims. This low level of awareness persists even though the U.S. Department of State labeled the events in Xinjiang as genocide back in January 2021 .
The center noted that overall foreign knowledge levels varied widely, reflecting differences in engagement with global affairs.
