MADISON, Wis. -- Clean Lakes Alliance will kick off its 15th annual Mendota Freeze contest this Saturday.
Anyone who guesses the exact date that they think Lake Mendota will completely freeze over will be entered to win a gift card to a local business.
The Wisconsin State Climatology Office requires ice to hold for a period of 24 hours before a lake can officially be declared frozen over.
Last winter, the Lake Mendota's official ice-on date was Dec. 25. Of the more than 1,300 people to enter the contest, 21 people guessed Lake Mendota would freeze on Dec. 25.
This year's contest will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, and participants only get one guess. Cast your vote here !
