Every Friday night after his football team finishes playing, Theodore coach Steve Mask embarks on a particular routine.

His son, Lexington head coach Brett Mask, does the same.

“As soon as I can, I try to find the score of Brett’s game either online or by calling his wife or texting him,” Steve Mask said. “Then later that night or the next morning, we usually talk for 30 minutes about how each other’s game went. It’s just sort of a recap. ‘How did you play? Did you play good or bad?’ More than anything, I think it’s just making sure each other is OK.

“It’s not really a father/son talk. It’s more of a best friend talk. Brett’s my best friend.”

Their relationship makes this year’s playoff run by both teams special.
