BELLEVILLE, IL. (First Alert 4) -A former Belleville attorney was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison, after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois said Jason R. Caraway, 51, admitted to embezzling more than $1 million from his clients.

Prosecutors said Caraway was a partner at Caraway, Fisher & Broombaugh, P.C., where he had control of the group’s bank accounts. Court documents stated Caraway spent client funds on personal and business expenses. They said he would often issue checks to himself, accept settlements without notifying clients, and engage in other malpractices.

In total, prosecutors said Caraway’s actions impacted more than 40 clients.
