For five hours, Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti fielded questions from former U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha – the federal government's top prosecutor during the Biden administration – as well as lawmakers in the joint Oversight Committee about the DOT's responsibility in the Washington Bridge closure.
The often testy exchanges touched on everything from the chain of custody for bridge inspections, the DOT's reliance on contractors for nearly all aspects of their work and how much, if any, responsibility for the bridge's failure belonged to the state's own transportation department.
