The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a historic victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, winning 208 out of 243 seats. This election was marked by a strong campaign focused on stability, development, and inclusivity, resonating with voters who supported the NDA's narrative of a 'double-engine government' led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Voter participation reached new heights, with women and young voters playing a crucial role in the NDA's success. The alliance's effective grassroots welfare schemes and mobilization efforts contributed significantly to this engagement. The NDA's victory was not only due to good governance but also strategic political engineering, including a well-planned seat-sharing arrangement among its partners, which included the BJP, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), HAM(S), and RLM.
The seat-sharing formula was finalized well before the elections, allowing the BJP and JD(U) to contest 101 seats each, while smaller allies like LJP contested 29 seats. This arrangement minimized intra-alliance conflicts and ensured that each party focused on constituencies where they had strong support, thus avoiding vote-splitting.
The NDA's campaign also revived fears of 'Jungle Raj', a term associated with lawlessness during the previous RJD regime. This narrative was strategically used to remind voters of past instability, contrasting it with the NDA's promises of security and development. Despite the elections being the most peaceful in recent history, the fear of returning to chaotic governance resonated with many voters.
A significant factor in the NDA's success was its expanded caste coalition, which included women and Economically Backward Classes (EBCs). This new coalition disrupted traditional voting patterns that had previously benefited the RJD. The NDA's outreach to women voters, supported by initiatives like the deployment of over 1.8 lakh Jeevika Didis to assist female voters, resulted in a historic turnout, with women voting significantly more than men in many districts.
Nitish Kumar's enduring popularity and the JD(U)'s resurgence also played a vital role in the NDA's triumph. Despite concerns about his age, Kumar remains a trusted figure in Bihar politics, often associated with good governance. His party's strategic seat-sharing with the BJP reinforced its relevance in the coalition.
In the Vaishali district, the NDA won 6 out of 7 seats, with only Tejashwi Yadav of the Grand Alliance retaining his seat in Raghopur. The NDA's performance across the state reflects a significant shift in voter sentiment, with the alliance achieving nearly 49% of the vote compared to the Mahagathbandhan's 38%.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed gratitude to the voters and alliance partners, stating that the massive majority reflects the unity of the NDA. Prime Minister Modi hailed the victory as a testament to good governance and social justice, promising to work towards further development in Bihar.
