Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has declared Cristiano Ronaldo blamed him for the forward's red card.

Ronaldo was sent off for striking Dara O'Shea with a flailing elbow during Portugal 's 2-0 defeat in Dublin on Thursday night.

It was the footballing legend's first-ever red for his country and he appeared to have lost his head before and after the card.

He originally received a booking for his conduct, before the referee headed to the on-pitch VAR screen to review the decision.

As things were being looked at, Ronaldo sarcastically wiped tears from his eyes in a gesture aimed at opponent O'Shea.
