A planned non-uniform day at Park View School in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, has been cancelled due to safety concerns involving two boys known to police. The event was scheduled for Friday in support of Children in Need but was called off after rumours circulated that the boys, who are not students at the school, intended to attend. The situation escalated when the two boys were reportedly asking students about the non-uniform day, prompting teachers to take action. In response, the school sent a letter to parents and carers instructing all pupils in Years 7 to 11 to wear full uniform instead. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary confirmed that they were alerted to the situation through social media. They stated, "We were made aware of information circulating on social media reporting two boys, who were not students, were planning to attend Park View School in Chester-le-Street today. A joint decision was made between police and the school to cancel the scheduled non-uniform day." Police officers were present at the school on Friday morning to reassure students and staff. The school communicated to parents that while the situation may be innocent, it warranted caution. The letter read, "Whilst this may be entirely innocent, we felt it was unusual and potentially cause for some caution. We have informed the police, who now have the relevant details of the two boys and we will ensure appropriate reassurance measures are in place around the Church Chare site on Friday." Despite there being no evidence of any threat or intent to cause harm, the school emphasised its commitment to maintaining safety. A parent of a 13-year-old student expressed concern over the situation, stating that many parents chose to keep their children at home. The father, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "Every parent I have spoken to have said their kids haven't gone to school today. There must be half of the school not turned up today. My son stayed off today. I'm worried about my son's safety. I think every parent would be." The incident has raised questions among parents regarding the school's communication and the nature of the boys involved. The father added, "The statement is too brief. We don't know if someone has been caught or not. We don't know if the school is in lockdown or what is happening. They just said two boys. They haven't mentioned if they are young men or teenagers." The school and police continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
