BROOKINGS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A group of middle-schoolers in Brookings is chipping in to help after a devastating typhoon in Alaska left students displaced.

According to Jay Roe of Brookings Radio, students at George S. Mickelson Middle School rallied together after Typhoon Halong destroyed communities and schools in western Alaska in October.

The middle-schoolers’ effort is led by Jennifer Lacher-Starace, an advisor to the middle school chapter of ‘Educators Rising’. This group of students hopes to become teachers someday.

The students didn’t need encouragement from Lacher-Starace; they were ready to go all on their own. Some of the students were working at a concessions stand to raise money for ‘Educators Rising,’ but decided to redirect the funds in a different direction.
