As holiday shopping ramps up, vehicle thefts are increasing in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said in a statement.

Early Friday, a CHP officer responded to an abandoned stolen vehicle that had been set on fire in rural Merced County.

Law enforcement officials said thieves often steal cars to use for other crimes or to strip and abandon them, with incidents rising during the busy holiday season.

Tips for Holiday Shopping Protection

Authorities warned that crowded parking lots and unattended vehicles create opportunities for criminals. They urged residents to lock doors, activate alarms, keep valuables out of sight, and place shopping bags in the trunk when possible. Choosing well-lit parking areas can also reduce risk.
