In a historic turn of events, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a significant victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, largely driven by an unprecedented turnout of women voters. This election saw women outvoting men for the first time in Bihar's history, with a remarkable 71.6 per cent of female voters participating compared to 62.8 per cent of male voters. Overall, the state recorded a voter turnout of 66.91 per cent, the highest since elections began in 1951.

The surge in women’s participation was particularly notable in the first and second phases of voting, where 69.04 per cent and 74.03 per cent of women, respectively, cast their votes. In several districts, women exceeded men’s turnout by significant margins, with some areas reporting gaps of over 14 percentage points.

The NDA's success can be attributed to various welfare initiatives aimed at women, including a direct cash transfer of ₹10,000 to over 1.21 crore women to support small businesses. This financial assistance, along with promises of further support for successful ventures, resonated with female voters. An NDA leader credited Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for building a loyal female vote bank through two decades of governance focused on women’s empowerment.

Policies such as the prohibition of alcohol, which has been particularly beneficial for women from underprivileged backgrounds, also played a crucial role. Many women expressed their support for the NDA, citing the tangible benefits they received, such as ration, water, and infrastructure improvements. One woman remarked, "Why wouldn’t we vote for those who gave us ration, water, roads, and bridges?"

The NDA's approach contrasted sharply with the opposition's promises, which many voters viewed as unfulfilled. The party's focus on economic empowerment through skill development and self-help groups further solidified its appeal among women.

As the results of the election settle in, it is clear that women voters have emerged as a powerful and decisive force in Bihar's political landscape. Their active participation not only influenced the election outcome but also marked a significant shift in the state's electoral dynamics, indicating a new era where women's voices are increasingly recognized and valued in the political arena.
